MICHAEL ROBERT INTERVIEW:

TITLE: Michael Robert: Musician with a Mission

Twenty years ago, Michael Robert was sure that every song needed distorted guitar and loud drums to constitute good music. A self –proclaimed “eighties rocker”, Robert was living his dream, playing in rock bands and opening for the likes of Skillet, Newsong, The Kry, Seven Places, and Randy Thomas. He was heavily involved in the music business and was on his way to making a name for himself. But God had another plan… Michael married, adopted a son and felt God called him to stay home and minister to his wife, family, and local church. Today, he says the inspiration for his songs stems from his marriage, six children, and the ups and downs of running a large business. How did this rocker transform into a self assured worship leader and prolific songwriter? Certainly not without hard work, a well-worn guitar, and, he notes, “a very, very faithful God.”
Michael Robert was not the choir-prodigy-turned-soloist. “I grew up in a ranch in Southern Oregon out in the middle of nowhere,” he laughs. “I learned to play guitar at age eleven, heavily influenced by Keith Green, Bread, Neil Diamond, and the Beatles. I would sit around writing songs…that was my extracurricular activity.” Though quite comfortable on the guitar, Robert says he initially struggled with the vocal aspects of his music. “Vocally, I have been studying under vocal coach Ken Orsow, who himself studied with Earth, Wind, and Fire and Stevie Wonder. “I felt that my vocals were my weakness. I have spent a lot of time working hard to hone the tone in my voice.” And it shows, now it is his strength, and there are tinges of various influences shining through. Among those whom he cites as influences are the gritty vocals of Todd Agnew and the signature Southern-rock growl from Third Day frontman Mac Powell. Strains of Darius Rucker from Hootie and the Blowfish, as well as Neil Diamond also make their appearances throughout Robert’s two most recent projects.
Robert is clearly a family man, and he makes no qualms about emphasizing where his priorities really lie. His voice takes on a softer, possessive tone when the subject moves to his wife and children. “We have four boys, and two girls,” he elaborates, “And I’m thankful the Lord blessed us with girls last…that has been amazing, and I needed those little girls to soften me up!” He is quick to point out that his marriage is central to his success, “We have been married sixteen years, and we work hard on our marriage. That’s very important to me, to work hard at it, and not just sit back and hope things fix themselves. We work on our own issues, we even go to counseling just to keep sharp, and make sure we’re on the right track with each other. We have found that to be the key to our success: to stay after it. With six kids, we can’t afford to let our relationship break.” Robert’s eldest son Sam is a missionary with Youth With a Mission, (YWAM) and splits his time between the Dominican Republic and Haiti. “We are trying to raise money to buy a thousand bibles for distribution, and help repair a YWAM school in Haiti,” he adds, “ and there’s a support letter at all of my concerts.”
Though relatively soft spoken in person, Robert slips into a steady confidence when you ask him about the music business. “Even though I am not signed with a label right now, I know I can be successful at whatever God calls me to do. For now, I will just keep being obedient to the call God has put on my life.”
Recording over seventy songs in the last year and a half, and having just celebrated the dual-release of two worship albums, Robert is no stranger to the recording studio. “What I love about music is there is no wrong answer,” he smiles, “You can do or create anything.” At the helm as co-producer with him, is Grammy/Dove award winning engineer Ron Davis, whose lengthy resume includes “Shout to the Lord” with Hillsong powerhouse Darlene Zschech.
While many artists are chasing down record labels and are after large tour billings, Robert will be performing only eighty to ninety concerts per year since he shies away from tours that would take him far from his family. “You know,” he says thoughtfully, “I have already been very successful, I have already achieved many goals, I feel so blessed to now be pursuing a music ministry in a way that will still keep balance in my life.”
Many listeners will certainly wonder why Robert, armed with an active family and successful business, (Robert runs the nations largest natural pest control company), would return to music now. He stops to consider the question, then decides, “It comes back to the fact that whenever I write a song, I feel such an intimacy with God that many of the pages are stained with tears. I wonder ‘why give it to me, God? Who am I? I’m just some guy sitting in his living room.’ It’s so overwhelming, sometimes it wipes me out for days, and I wonder what plan God has for it. When I wrote the song ‘Purify Me’, I felt God was using the story in Isaiah to speak to me: ‘Yes I am a man of unclean lips but God wants to purify each of us, so he can use us for His purpose.’ Two years ago my family said “We believe that God has told us that now is the time”.”

He concludes, “To sit at home and be with my kids make so much more sense. Continuing to build the business makes much more sense. To have the support of my wife and children is amazing. My kids love it they are the biggest fans, I take them with me whenever I can. To see them in the front row at my concerts, raising their hands worshiping, or singing the songs at home while listening to their iPods, bring joy to my heart, tears to my eyes, and makes it completely worthwhile.”
